Apple founder Steve Jobs has died aged 56.

Statement by Apple’s Board of Directors:

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts

Steve Jobs: How to live before you die

Stumbled across this on Simply Zesty’s website, brilliant-never aired Apple TV ad narrated by Steve Jobs

The new iPhone 4S: what’s it all about?

5 Oct

With much anticipation I logged onto the live blog from Apple’s press conference yesterday, ‘Let’s talk iPhone’ where it was expected by many that the new iPhone 5 would be revealed. It was odd to see Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook (whose first product launch this was as CEO) walk out on stage with Steve Jobs nowhere to be seen.

Sorry, CBS make you watch a 30 second ad before the video

Millions of people from around the world were online at the same time discussing what the new model would be like; there were over 500,000 other people following the live blog on the site I was on. I naively searched for #letstalkiphone on Tweetdeck; my computer couldn’t handle the volume of tweets and completely froze.

I also had to get to my important debut Macra na Feirme meeting.

When I checked back, the new ‘iPhone 4S’, not ‘iPhone 5’ had been revealed and reaction from the online community was mixed.

the new iPhone 4S looks exactly like the iPhone 4

There are a few really good improvements on the existing iPhone 4:

  • better battery life
  • is apparently ‘seven times faster than its predecessor’
  • new A5 chip (same as in the iPad 2)
  • better camera and video
  • Twitter integration
  • ‘Siri’ – a new voice recognition feature. So you can ask, ‘What’s the weather like today?’ and your iPhone will find the answer online
  • iCloud (about time) – your contacts, messages, calendar, emails, music etc will be wirelessly back up on your devices
It will be available in the UK from the 14th October. UK and Ireland prices have yet to be announced however.
